We are shining the spotlight on our amazing technicians in a series of blogs: Meet a CRC Technician! Read on to find out about their career route, what a typical day looks like and much more. As it’s National Careers Week they will be sharing some top tips for people considering a career as a Technician in Education.
Meet Technician, Paul Cawthorn

What department(s) / subjects do you support?
Electrical Installations
How did you come to be a technician? (What career/educational route have you taken to get here?)
I completed my Level 1 and Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations here. Halfway through my Level 2 course I saw and applied for the position and got the job. I started in September of 2022 and have been here since.
What does a typical day look like as a technician?
It starts off by unlocking all the relevant workshops and storerooms and setting them up ready for the day. During the day I assist with the Lecturers acting as another set of eyes and ears for them, which eases their sessions a bit. If I’m not doing that there’s always small jobs to do like sorting materials, checking resources, creating and sorting any orders that have arrived. Once the day’s done, it’s a simple sweep round and lock up of everything that was opened.
What are the key skills of a great FE technician?
Time Management, approachable and friendly, confident and a good sense of humour.
What do you particularly like about being a technician /being a technician at CRC?
I like how no two days are the same and there’s always something new I learn by the end of the day and so do the students.
What advice would you offer anyone considering becoming a technician?
Go for it, it’s a good role to be in to learn more about the subject area you want to fully pursue in later life. It’s a good middle ground position to expand your knowledge and open the eyes of the current students and any future students.
CELEBRATE TECHNICIANS!
We want to thank our technicians for all the great work they do supporting CRC staff and students.
