Joshua Spillet,
CNC Machinist at Webtec

Joshua Spillett didn’t know what he wanted to do after his GCSEs, but a series of careers events arranged by Hinchingbrooke School resulted in visits to a variety of engineering companies, including manufacturing firm Webtec. Joshua was intrigued by the technical elements of using machinery to complete a set of tasks, and the scientific aspect of the manufacturing environment.

Upon returning to the classroom, Joshua contacted Webtec to enquire about apprenticeship opportunities with the company, and soon after he signed up to complete a Level 2 General Engineering apprenticeship, with Cambridge Regional College as the educational provider. Joshua has since progressed from Level 2 to Level 3 and he is now in his third year of further education.

“I have learned a lot, both from attending college and being in the work-based learning environment. It has been great to learn on the job, gaining experience and a qualification, and the bonus is that I get paid.”

Joshua works as a CNC Machinist, a role that involves setting and programming machinery to complete a task and he is enjoying his chosen career path so much that he plans to stay with Webtec to progress to Level 4 where he will work towards gaining his programming certificates.

This week, Joshua attended the first ever Cambridge Careers Fair as an exhibitor, with his employer Webtec, to promote the apprenticeship route and the opportunities that come with this pathway to forging a career.

Joshua added, “I have enjoyed being at the careers fair, not only to promote the company but also to offer advice and support to the next generation of apprentices. I have enjoyed seeing what people are interested in and where they see their careers going. If I can help someone to achieve their goals, then I am happy to help.”
