The Logistics and Counterbalance Skills Bootcamp, provided by Cambridge Regional College and funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, is a 4-week programme that provides learners with the core knowledge and hands-on experience needed to work safely and effectively in a warehouse and logistics environment. Students learn forklift operation, health and safety practices, recycling and waste management, and more. Upon course completion, learners are guaranteed an interview with an actively recruiting employer.
We talked to Kirstie, a learner who recently completed this course, about her reasons for attending the course and what she hopes to do next with the skills she’s gained.
My small business closed after I realised I wasn’t as strong at running a business as I’d hoped. I went back onto Universal Credit, and during a job fair I came across the CRC stand. The course immediately caught my eye—especially the sustainability and waste‑management elements—and I thought the counterbalance skills would be useful when looking for work. I’m also hoping to help or work at the Universal site once it opens.
I learned how to operate safely within a warehouse environment and gained hands‑on experience with three mechanical aids: the counterbalance truck, the reach truck, and the PPT. I also developed a better understanding of what to look for in a workplace and strengthened my general employment skills.
I’ve genuinely enjoyed it. Coming into logistics with little to no experience, the course has given me a solid foundation, not just for finding work, but for building on the skills I’ve gained. My tutors have played a big part in boosting my confidence, and I now feel much more positive about my chances of finding employment after the course.
Having a structured routine again has really helped my personal productivity, which I often struggle with on my own. I’ve also been able to reconnect with friends and family who work in or around the sector. Most importantly, I’ve built confidence where I previously had very little.
I plan to apply for temporary part‑time work to get a sense of what I can manage as I return to employment. I’ll be looking at agency roles and job‑search websites to find the right opportunities.
Kirstie began the Logistics and Counterbalance Skills bootcamp course with low confidence when speaking in a group and on her own, which initially made participation difficult. With additional support such as extra time, structured guidance and one to one teaching she gradually became more confident, comfortable and engaged. She made excellent progress not only in communication but also demonstrated strong performance in both written tasks and the practical forklift training. Showing steady improvement, commitment and a positive attitude throughout the course which in the end helped her to pass the course with flying colours.
