English as a Second or Other Language is a course delivered to improve the English language skills of individuals with an alternative mother language. Historically these courses have been delivered in a face-to-face setting at the Cambridge or Huntingdon campus of Cambridge Regional College, however the course delivery has recently been extended to include online delivery, improving accessibility to learning.
In addition to improving learners’ English skills in the areas of speaking, listening, grammar and writing and their understanding of life in the UK, the online ESOL course provides the opportunity for students to improve their IT skills through the regular use of computers and Microsoft Teams.
The first cohort of online learners commenced their online learning last year and initial feedback has been very promising with one Online Level 2 learner saying,
I really enjoyed this English course, and I am very grateful that CRC opened this online evening class. For me, as a full-time worker, it was a great opportunity to join the course as I didn’t have to travel to the college and could join from home or from work.
Students aged 19+ and living within the PE and CB postcode areas will be fully funded for the ESOL course and those living outside of the funded postcode area may qualify for alternative funding based on their income and employment status. Eligible applicants will be supported in seeking funding upon enrolment. All learners will be required to pay a fee for course materials and all applicants must have settled or pre-settled status and have been living in the EEA or UK for a minimum of 3 years before the start of the course.
Classes take place once a week, either morning (2-hr lessons 2 or 3 times per week) or evening (3 hours once a week). Morning online lessons will be Tuesday to Thursday, 10 – 12 and evening online lesson delivery depends on the level upon entry.
