Dan Altria, Design Civil Engineer

In 2020, Dan Altria started an apprenticeship with Sweco UK Ltd as a Trainee Technician, and he quickly progressed within the company to become a Design Civil Engineer. In 2021, Dan was nominated for a Cambridge Regional College Apprenticeship Award by his Assessor after they received feedback from the employer stating that he was a model apprentice who had demonstrated a professional attitude to his work, and significant knowledge within the civil engineering sector.

Since accepting his award for Construction Apprentice of the Year, Dan has completed the college element of his apprenticeship and is currently going through the End Point Assessment process with the Institute of Civil Engineers to complete his qualification. To progress his education further, Dan has applied for a place at Anglia Ruskin University to complete his degree, which he will do alongside his role as Design Civil Engineer with Sweco UK Ltd.

Dan said, “The response from my peers since achieving my award has been fantastic, and it has given me a great sense of pride in my learning. This in turn has given me the confidence to progress to university to gain my degree.”

Looking ahead to his career progression, Dan aspires to work in different countries across the world to develop his knowledge and understanding in the global market.

Dan added, “Completing an apprenticeship gave me knowledge and skills that I don’t think I would have gained in a traditional learning environment. I have been able to earn an income while studying and have secured a sound understanding of Civil Engineering in a practical, work environment. The great thing about apprenticeships is that they are offered across the full range of sectors, meaning they anyone can choose the apprenticeship route.”
