Cambridge and Huntingdon Students Scoop Prizes in Regional Construction Skills Competition

Cambridge Regional College students from Cambridge and Huntingdon Campuses scooped top prizes in a regional construction skills competition amongst local colleges in early May. Huntingdon students took 1st and 3rd place in electrical installations and Cambridge campus students tool 1st and 2nd place in carpentry.

Regional Construction Skills Competition judges

Regional Construction Skills Competition judges

On the 1st May, 11 Level 1 students studying Bricklaying, Carpentry and Electrical Installations from CRC Huntingdon and Cambridge campuses took part in a Level 1 Skills Competition hosted by Inspire Education Group. Students across the region competed from six different colleges within the region; Peterborough College, Stamford College, College of West Anglia, Boston College, Grantham College and Cambridge Regional College.

The competition was judged by local employers Cambridge Regional College winners included:

Carpentry competition:

  • 1st place, Oscar Slingsby, 17, Downham Market, Cambridge Regional College Cambridge Campus 
  • 2nd place, Fred Watts, 17, Cambridge, Cambridge Regional College Cambridge Campus 

Electrical Installations competition;

  • 1st place, Chelsea Johnson, 27, Huntingdon, Cambridge Regional College Huntingdon Campus 
  • 3rd place, Will Pedley, 17, Huntingdon, Cambridge Regional College Huntingdon Campus 

Students had a set amount of time to complete a practical task within the trade area of their studies.

Chris Styles, Head of Construction, said “The CRC students who took part in the competition represented the college and themselves well and carried out the competition pieces to high standards with some great feedback from the judges for all of our learners. It was great to see Level 1 students showcasing the skills they have been taught while studying with us. “To have this collaboration between local colleges gives students a great opportunity to showcase their skills, focus and hear direct feedback from industry.”
