Access courses provide a stepping stone to Higher Education by providing study skills and academic knowledge for university.
Upon leaving secondary education, Emma Julian entered employment in the care sector where she spent ten years undertaking a variety of roles. The knowledge and experience that she gained during this time gave Emma the opportunity to consider her career aspirations and the pathway she needed to follow to achieve her dream of becoming a midwife.
Emma was looking for a way to gain the qualifications required for university, while continuing to work, and found that the Access to Nursing and Health Professions at Cambridge Regional College fulfilled this requirement.
Emma said, “Being a one year study programme means that the Access course is a fast-paced, so I had to quickly learn how to prioritise my workload, which was a good lesson in preparing for university. The Access course is a good stepping-stone, it got me back into the mindset of thinking academically, which is a skill I felt I had lost since leaving school. It is a challenging course, but it is rewarding.”
“There have been a lot of aspects of the course that have already proven to be really beneficial. The biology, psychology and sociology units have been particularly useful with the research project I am undertaking for my degree. In addition, the support provided by the CRC lecturers, in respect of referencing your work, was so helpful with preparing me for university style writing.”
“One of the best parts about returning to education at CRC, as an adult learner, was the support provided by the tutors. Returning to College was a daunting prospect, but the tutors were amazing. They wanted us to succeed and achieve our goals. My advice, for current and future learners, is to be organised from the outset as it will help you to manage your studies alongside other commitments.
