Thirty‑four supported learning students have returned from an inspiring residential trip to Dorset, having spent a week developing independence, confidence and essential life skills at the Rockley Camp Buddens Centre.
After arriving safely and settling into camp, students quickly immersed themselves in a full programme of outdoor and team‑based activities, including canoeing, stand‑up paddle boarding, raft building, climbing, archery and group challenges. For many students, this was also their first experience of camping under the stars, making the achievement even more significant.
Throughout the week, a strong focus was placed on building independence and communication skills. Students took responsibility for everyday routines such as washing their own plates, bowls and cutlery after meals, alongside working together during activities that encouraged cooperation, resilience and problem‑solving.
Each day brought new challenges and personal breakthroughs. Some students overcame fears of water or heights, while others achieved important milestones through tasks many of us take for granted. By day three, with blue skies overhead, every student had tested their nerves on the climbing wall and zip wire and every single one gave it a go, succeeding and excelling in their own way.
Students also enjoyed a special visit from Rockley’s campsite dog and marketing team, with several learners confidently conducting interviews to reflect on their experiences a fantastic example of growing communication skills in action.
The week concluded with a campfire evening, toasting marshmallows and sharing memories before packing up for the journey home. Although tired, students left Dorset in great spirits, proud of what they had achieved.
Rockley provided a safe, structured and engaging environment that enabled our SEND students to develop emotional regulation, improve social skills and build self‑belief. These experiences promote resilience, physical wellbeing and positive behaviour, supporting long‑term personal growth.
We would like to thank the Rockley team for their patience, flexibility and outstanding support, as well as our dedicated staff, whose commitment ensured the success of the trip. As we say goodbye for another year, we do so with pride and with memories that will last a lifetime.
