The Prince’s Trust and Clare College

Find out how Clare College became involved with the Prince’s Trust…

A new pair of helping hands…

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme is a 12-week personal development course, offering work experience, qualifications, practical skills, community projects and a residential week to young people between 16 and 25 who are unemployed. 70% of the young people taking part in the programme go on to gain employment, training or further education within three months.

Our Finance Manager, Jackie Lince has been fundamental in arranging for Clare to be involved with the Prince’s Trust scheme. After attending a presentation she put forward the opportunity for College to support the Trust through practical experience. Billy was looking for practical outdoor work that would challenge him and teach him new skills. Jackie arranged with Steve Elstubb, Head Gardener for Billy to lend a helping hand to the gardening team!

During Billy’s two weeks at Clare he learnt how to identify and cut back plants and shrubs for the winter, weed beds, cut the grass, plant bulbs, use the leaf blower and keep the grounds tidy. Billy found the two weeks very rewarding and commented that the team helped him gain self-belief in his abilities and developed his team working skills.

An enormous change was seen in Billy during his two weeks at Clare, his attitude towards work improved and he became more confident communicating ideas. On his return to the trust it was noted that he volunteered to speak on behalf of the group in front of corporate volunteers, something which previously he wouldn’t have considered.

Thank you to Steve and his team for welcoming Billy to Clare and for giving him such an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
