The Diploma in Creative practice, Art and Design will build on your previous art experiences and will give you the opportunity to develop, broaden and strengthen your skills, or learn new ones if no previous art experience. You will be encouraged to work on your own initiative, learn to think independently and solve problems with flair; all with the teaching and support of specialist lecturers in our range of well-equipped workshops.
In the first year (diploma) you will initially gain a broad knowledge of Art and Design practices and then specialise within a pathway of your choice:
General Art and Design: You will have a series of workshops in art which will allow you to experience and explore, ceramics including coil pot making, still life/portrait drawing, life drawing, water colour, acrylic and oil painting, print making and the use of these materials in 2D,3D and time-based workshops. You will learn new techniques, use new materials and be able to make independent choices about what and how you make things.
Visual Communication (Photography & Graphics): As well as exploring 2D,3D, time-based work. As well as learning the skills for digital photography, you will also experience using the dark room to take and produce film photography photographs and develop techniques such as photogram and cyanotypes. The techniques you learn and the work you produce within the photography workshops can be transferred into Graphic Design, where you will learn skills such as editorial design (magazines), digital illustration, marketing, branding and advertising.
Fashion and Textiles: You will become to understand the many different career options within the Fashion and Textile industry, allowing you to learn new skills and techniques the support your future career and education. Some of the skills will include Fashion Research and Design, Pattern Cutting and Garment Construction, Printmaking for Fashion and Textiles, Fashion Illustration, Styling, Fashion Business and Retail, Textile Design and Construction.
The Study Programme will also help you get together a great portfolio of work, full of exciting ideas through the application of art and design is taught and delivered as project-based assignments, covering the fundamentals of art and design language, the formal elements: line, tone, shape, form, structure, pattern, scale and colour etc.
All practices you will work on devised creative industry scenarios and live assignments: e.g. collaborative projects the wider creative industries across college and within the community. Industry ready skills, competitions, structured /self-directed project management and independent study around self-promotion.
Year 2, UAL L3 Extended Diploma
UCAS Points – Pass (72) Merit (120) Distinction (168)
Through one-to one tutorials, workshops, and Independent Learning, learners will be expected to research, plan and produce projects tailored to their chosen pathway, which will lead to the end-of-year FMP
After successful completion of this study programme you can progress onto the Level 4 Foundation Diploma, attend higher education at University or gain employment within the industry.
4 GCSEs (Grade C or above) which should ideally include Maths and/or English. You are welcome to bring along a portfolio of your artwork, although this is not a rep-requisite. You will need to choose which route you wish to undertake – General Art and Design, Viscom or Fashion.
There is regular one to one tutorial provision.

Once we have received your application, you will be invited to a Welcome Event and for a guidance discussion. Through the Welcome Event you will get the chance to learn more about college and your course. When you have your conditional offer, you will be invited and required to attend new student Taster Days during the summer before the start of your course.
