About the Course

If you want to become a counsellor, the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills forms the foundation of professional counselling practice.  It also is for those who want develop essential listening and communications skills used in other professional or helping roles. It is also for those who want to improve their professional and personal relationships as part of personal development.   During this course you will consider:

• What is counselling – the role of the helper and help and how to work empathically
• What are counselling skills
• Using counselling skills ethically and safely
• Using feedback and reflection to enhance counselling skills

NB: The course will run from Sept subject to a suitable number of students applying and being accepted

Progression

Successful candidates may progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies. The unit credit can also be used towards other relevant qualifications on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements are necessary to enrol on this course.

However, this qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological distress. The course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities. If you are unsure then you can explore these considerations at interview.

Assessment

The expectation is that you will attend all lessons in college face to face. There is a minimum expectation of 90% attendance. It is important that you build up a portfolio of work including ongoing assessments, weekly journals, skills practice and worksheets. These are all linked to criteria you need to pass. Your tutor will support you to do that.  In addition to this internal assessment, there are externally assessed elements and all must be passed to gain the qualification.

Once we have received your application, you will be invited to attend a Welcome Event. At the Welcome Event you will meet the tutors and get the chance to learn more about college and your course. You will also have a discussion with one of our tutors who will look to make you a formal offer for September.
