This one-year course explores a basic understanding of working in the sports sector. You will undertake a variety of units covering specialist areas, providing you with the knowledge and skills to progress with your studies or move into emplyment within the industry at an entry level. 

About the Course

The course is made up of the following units:

Module 1
• Investigating Roles and responsibilities at work
• Job Opportunities in Sport & Active Leisure
• How the body works
• Taking part in exercise and fitness

Module 2
• Working in Sport & Active Leisure
• Managing health at work
• Risks and Hazards in Sport & Active Leisure
• Planning own fitness programmes

Module 3
• Sport & Active Leisure Group project
• Physical activities for Children
• Leading a Sport & Active Leisure activity

Compulsory residential activities to develop team work and practical skills are an integral part of the course. There is an additional cost to cover these trips, day trips, sports kits, travel costs associated with team games or residential and guest speakers. This charge is paid at enrolment and is non-refundable. The Learner Support Fund is available and could help assist in paying towards these fees.

Employability skills gained on a  Level 1 Sport Studies course include:
•  Being able to assist with the planning and leadership of sport and leisure activities for children.
•  The structure and function of the body systems and the importance of nutrition.
•  Rights and Responsibilities in the sports industry.
•  How to gain a job within the sports industry.
•  The risks and hazards and safe practice within the sports industry.
•  Improving your own fitness
•  Understand the positive effects regular exercise has on physical, mental, emotional well-being.

Progression

This course may allow you to progress on to studying for BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Sport. The course enables you to prepare for work or further study, will provide you with the learning opportunities and experiences to enhance your understanding by learning in, learning about, and learning through sports activities. As part of your course, you may have the opportunity to play for one of our college teams. Currently we have teams that represent the college nationally in football, basketball, netball and rugby. We also attend the AOC Regional and National Championship where we sent representatives in over 10 different sports. We also run a scholarship programme with Cambridge United for male and female football. Please see additional leaflet for more information to include the application process and trials.

Entry Requirements

You will need 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above, general education and an active interest in the Sport & Active Leisure Industry. Also, good attendance and conduct record and completion of a fitness test. In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview. Assessment

Each project, activity or assignment that you complete will be assessed. These assessments indicate your level of performance and contribute to your final grade. Assessment will be through practical and theoretical work. You will be required to build a portfolio of assignment work throughout the course which will be externally assessed. You will be required to take part in weekly physical activity. You will also be assessed on your physical fitness four times a year. You must be willing to take part in all practical activities and assessments.

Once we have received your application, you will be invited to a Welcome Event and for a guidance discussion. Through the Welcome Event you will get the chance to learn more about college and your course. When you have your conditional offer, you will be invited and required to attend new student Taster Days during the summer before the start of your course.
