The Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Makeup Industry can be demanding career, requiring good health, stamina, a capacity for hard work, a pleasant personality and the ability to get on with people. If you think that you possess these qualities, you want to learn a range of industry skills and you have a genuine interest in this career route then this introductory course is for you. The introductory course also gives you some dedicated time to improve your English and maths, study your GCSEs and/or improve your grades.
The course will provide you with:

We will introduce you to an industry, where professionalism, creativity and artistry combined with technical skills provide an excellent service experience for your clients. You will develop the behaviours and attitudes expected of a professional hairdresser, therapist or makeup artist. From the reception desk to the salon floor, you will explore the theory behind, learn and practice a range of basic hair and beauty skills such as shampooing, blow-drying, hand, skin care and makeup techniques.
After the initial few weeks you will choose a specific pathway in either Hairdressing or Beauty and focus on developing more specialised skills from your chosen industry for the remainder of the college year.
From plaiting and twisting, nail artistry or themed face painting, progressing to level 2 skills preparing you for the next step, such as basic cutting, eye treatments or fashion, photographic makeup depending on the path you have chosen.
Kit and Uniform - You will need to purchase a kit and uniform before the start of the programme, the Level 1 mandatory kit and uniform will cost around £100 (Hair route) £200 (Beauty route) subject to change slightly with inflation. There is also up to £100 of optional extra’s and further details will be given to you at the Welcome Event.
Work placement in the commercial environment is part of your course, which helps you to develop real life working skills and employability.
There will also be opportunities to enter competitions, listen to guest speakers and attend trips to hair and beauty exhibitions.
You may also be required to study and achieve further qualifications in English and maths to assist in your own personal development.
Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to the Level 2 Hair, Beauty or Media Makeup course or an Apprenticeship. The industry provides a fascinating and rewarding career, with many varied opportunities for practical and creative individuals who enjoy working with people.
You will need 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above. Potential candidates must demonstrate their commitment and enthusiasm towards a career within the Hair and Beauty industry. Each candidate will be considered on their experience, suitability, school reference showing good attendance and behaviour and a practical aptitude test Your interview and the college Welcome Events, will provide you with information about: ? The equipment and salon uniform you will need before the start of the course. ? Career paths and further courses available. And give us a chance to get to know you. If successful in gaining a place you will be required to attend three consecutive Taster Days during the summer, to give you a feel for the course you have chosen. In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

Once we have received your application, you will be invited to attend a Welcome Event. At the Welcome Event you will meet the tutors and get the chance to learn more about college and your course. You will also have a discussion with one of our tutors who will look to make you a formal offer for September.
