This course is designed for Product Design & Development Technicians who primarily work on all stages of product creation and modification. They support activities ranging from early concept feasibility, design and development stages right through to final preparation for launch and customers.

About the Programme

This course is designed for Product Design & Development Technicians who primarily work on all stages of product creation and modification. They support activities ranging from early concept feasibility, design and development stages right through to final preparation for launch and customers. This includes working in concept studios, rapid prototyping, assembly, testing, validating and analysing performance. Typically they work closely with engineers in bring new concepts to life or supporting redesigns of existing products.
It starts by building foundation skills in engineering disciplines before focussing on the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to be a successful Product Design and Development Technician

Progression

The successful completion of this course could lead to a supervisory role in engineering with a Level 4 Apprenticeship, an HNC/HND or a Degree in Engineering.

Entry Requirements

Suitable employment. GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics and 1 other subject or the equivalent.

End Point Assessment

Apprentices will attend college on day-release for 1 or 2 days a week during term time for 3 years.  During this time, they will be visited in the workplace every 8 to 10 weeks where they will be guided through the work-based side of their programme.  The final 6 months are focussed on preparing the apprentice for End-Point Assessment which will determine the final outcome of the Apprenticeship.  This includes theory and practical tests.

Securing an apprenticeship position can be challenging, therefore we advise all aspiring apprentices, who are leaving school, to apply for a full-time course in the same subject. Having a Plan B ensures you can continue with your education in September and build the practical knowledge and confidence you need to progress onto an apprenticeship when one becomes available.
