About the Programme

This Apprenticeship Standard is designed for Machinists who are involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work, machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multi- axis CNC machine tools centres. They will be expected to be able set up, operate and adjust/edit equipment settings as applicable to the machine tool being used. When using CNC equipment they will be expected to be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. During and on completion of the machining operations they will be expected to measure and check the components being produced and make adjustments to the equipment/programme to ensure components meet the required specification.

Progression

The successful completion of this course could lead to a supervisory role in engineering with a Level 4 Apprenticeship, an HNC/HND or a Degree in Engineering.

Entry Requirements

Suitable employment. GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics and 1 other subject or the equivalent.
Remember, an apprenticeship is a job so the hiring employer may have additional criteria that will have to be met alongside CRC’s entry criteria.

End Point Assessment

Apprentices will attend college on day-release for 1 or 2 days a week during term time for 3 years.  During this time, they will be visited in the workplace every 8 to 10 weeks where they will be guided through the work-based side of their programme.  The final 6 months are focussed on preparing the apprentice for End-Point Assessment which will determine the final outcome of the Apprenticeship.  This includes theory and practical tests.
