About the Course

This one year full time programme is designed to build the knowledge and skills required to work with babies and young children from 0-5 years.

You will study subjects including:

• Role of the early years practitioner
• Understand how to support children's development
• Legislation, safeguarding, protection and welfare
• Support care routines
• Special educational needs and disabilities
• Planning and delivery of activities
• Promoting play and learning

This programme incorporates experience within a real work environment which is an integral part of the course and takes place in an early years setting for a minimum of 2 days per week.

The development of practical English and Maths skills will be an essential part of your programme. In addition, if you have not achieved a GCSE grade C or above in English and/or Maths (or new grading 4 or above for GCSE Maths and English), you will study for a recognised qualification appropriate to your level e.g. GCSE or Functional Skills. IT will be embedded in the delivery of your specialist skills.

There will be a cost to students of £120 which includes security check (DBS) and course materials, 19+ fees apply.

Once at the College you will have to complete a Disclosure & Barring Service check. It is not possible to complete the course without satisfactory clearance.

In addition to the entry qualifications, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of an interview and initial assessment which will take place at the College.

Progression

Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to gain employment in an early years settings as an Assistant , during which time you may also be able to undertake an apprenticeship. If you achieve a Pass and excellent placement reports you may progress to Level 3 NCFE CACHE Technical Diploma in Childcare and Education. Alternatively you could apply for any level 3 course subject to course requirements.

Entry Requirements

3 GCSE's at grade 3 (D) or above including English or Maths, or Successful completion of a full Level 1 course

Assessment

This NCFE CACHE Level 2 Diploma has internally assessed units marked by your tutor and practical skills assessed in your work experience placement. You are required to provide evidence of completion of your placement hours and to reflect on your performance and development. All criteria must be achieved in order to obtain a pass.

Through the Welcome Event you will get the chance to learn more about college and your course. When you have your conditional offer, you will be invited and required to attend new student Taster Days during the summer before the start of your course.
