The course was devised in association with a variety of public, private and voluntary sectors, for example the Police, Armed Forces, Local Government, Probation, Youth Offending Teams and the Civil Service. You will study a broad spectrum of issues relating to a variety of public and private services, and other sectors.
The course encompasses a wide range of the public and private sectors and develops the skills and attributes that are fundamental in any public, voluntary or private service industry. The course team will use CRC's excellent links with relevant external agencies, for example, the Cambridge University Officers' Training Corps, Royal Marine Reserves, Army Reserves, Police Specials, County Councils for guest lectures and additional opportunities for students thus ensuring vocational experience is placed at the heart of this programme.
For Home and EU students, a loan from the Student Loans Company is available to support learners with fees if applied for. These fees cover the overall costs of the course, including sports kits, guest speakers, day trips and additional courses that will be run throughout the year.
The course is made up from the following units:
• Managing Public Sector Finance
• Government Decision Making and the Public Services
• Research Project
• Personal and Professional Development
• Global Environment
• Emergency Planning and the Public Services
• Crime reduction and Community Safety
• Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation (Blended)
You will also be expected to undertake a comprehensive physical training regime to fully prepare you for a successful career in the Services. The course will provide you with first hand experience of a variety of roles in the Public Services. It will be actively encouraged that all learners are engaged with either the Police Specials Constabulary, Royal Marine/RAF/Army Reserves or similar whilst attending College. Opportunities to be involved in the development and delivery of the Level 1 – 3 Uniformed Services Course will also be available to support you to develop the skills required to lead and motivate service personnel in the future.
During your time on the course you will have the chance to attend extra residential activities. These may include:
• Football (Male and Female)
• Racket sports
• Volunteering Trip (Morocco)
There is an extra cost for these activities.
Additional Qualifications - Level 3 Award in Education and Training (£380).
This is classed as a full-time course – on successful completion of this course, you will gain a BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma. Home & EU students are eligible to apply for a full-time loan from Student Finance England.
Progression & Career Opportunities
This programme is a full Level 5 qualification which can lead to enhanced employment in any of the Public Services such as the Police, Fire Service and Prison Service or entry to Higher Education through a top-up degree.
To join the BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma course you will need to show evidence that you have achieved successfully on a programme of sustained level 4 study and provide proof of certification and individual units completed.
In addition you must have:
• 5 GCSEs grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent. This must include GCSE English and Mathematics.
You will have an active and keen interest in the Uniformed Public Services and will have experience of being involved with the services or serving as a cadet etc. With this experience, you will be anticipating a career in the Public Services. The offer on the course is subject to the successful attendance of Welcome Event and Induction Day, and completion of a pre-course assignment.
In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a professional interview.

We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at CRC. To make this happen we offer both learning and personal support by specialist staff tailored to meet your specific needs.
Each project, activity or assignment that you complete will be assessed. These assessments indicate your level of performance and contribute to your final grade. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Assessment will be through practical and theoretical assignments.
