Life Skills – English and Maths Courses for Adults
Have you suddenly realised that English and Maths are a critical requirement and basic skill, not only in life but also for your career as well? The good news is, Cambridge Regional College appreciates this and is pleased to be able to offer courses designed specifically for adult learners.
“I just want to say how grateful I am for all the help and encouragement you have given me towards my GCSE exams. They are something that I have been meaning to do for about 30 years and you have given me the confidence to do this.”
Many of our students have discovered that to progress to the next stage of their career, perhaps change career or even assist their family with homework, functional English and Maths skills are important and crucial in our everyday lives.
English and maths for adults is FREE to those who do not have GCSE in English or maths at grades 4-9 (or A*-C in previous grading system).
Classes are available at various levels from beginners up to the equivalent of a GCSE Grade C.
Classes are FREE and available throughout the week – see table below. To find out more information about the specific courses use the website course search.
Please note all classes will be delivered online via distance learning until December 2020 for the protection of our students and staff.

They are usually free for adults who do not already have a GCSE grade 4 or higher. If you do not qualify for the courses for free, we will advise you of the cost before you enrol onto the course.
A mandatory part of the application process is to attend the college and complete an assessment. This will include online and paper-based activities which will allow us to check your understanding of the subject you have applied for. We will use the results of the assessment to advise you of the most appropriate course.
Generally, we allow up to 1hr for each assessment. However, every applicant is different so some may use the full hour whilst others may complete the assessments more quickly. The assessments focus on the essential skills within each subject area such as spelling, punctuation, grammar and structure for English. The maths assessment focus on skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, shapes, graphs, ratio, fractions. Both assessments include a section which assesses your level of understanding of English.
If you want to refresh your skills in preparation for the assessment you can use online resources or text books. BBC Bitesize is a good place to start.
Yes, there is an expectation that you are able to commit to attending all sessions. It is important that you have consistency in your attendance to enable us to support you in succeeding. If you are unable to attend classes regularly due to extenuating circumstances you need to discuss with your class tutor who will advise you your options.
There is no automatic progression you will be required to complete another assessment to ensure that you are provided with the correct advice and guidance on your next steps.
GCSE exams are usually in the Summer (May/June). We ask that students do not book holidays during these months. There are 3 exams for maths and 2 for English. The GCSE exam dates a published on the Government website, on the college website and notice boards around the campus. If you miss a GCSE exam it is unlikely that you will achieve a grade 4 overall.
Functional skills assessments are on-demand which means that you can be entered when your tutor and you think you are ready and have the skills required to pass. There is one assessment for maths and two for English.
More detail on the exams/assessment can be found on the qualification pages.
We do not accept external candidates, however if you check the website of the awarding organisation that you wish to sit with, they may be able to provide a list of providers who accept external candidates.
If English is not your first language you will complete a short additional assessment to determine if you have the English language skills required for GCSE and functional skills qualifications. The college offers ESOL qualifications which may be a more appropriate course to take prior to moving onto GCSE or functional skills.
