Deakin Learning Centre opens its doors to the public
Schools, health professionals, community groups and members of the public are being invited to explore Cambridge Regional College’s newest learning centre.
The innovative Deakin Centre, which has just welcomed its first students, provides an additional ‘world of work’ learning environment for the students studying programmes in the college’s Care, Health and Early Years Academy. The building is shared with health professionals, with two of the four floors used for NHS staff training by Cambridge University Hospitals.
The £6 million centre also provides well-equipped meeting places and excellent facilities for local community groups, who are being invited to a special viewing and information event attended by Cambridge mayor Ian Nimmo-Smith.
Three other information events are planned throughout March for different groups to showcase the four-storey building in the heart of the biomedical campus.
Pam Byrd, head of CRC’s Care, Health and Early Years Academy, said the Deakin Centre incorporated community activity as well as being a teaching facility.
“This is where we will be offering practical activities for our Care, Health and Early Years students, and also giving them the opportunity to carry out collaborative projects with community groups in the Deakin Centre itself as well as a base for valuable work experience in the hospital,” she said.
“The centre has a unique design. It contains state-of-the-art facilities and is a superb addition to the learning provision in the region.
“It also has purpose-built meeting areas and an internet café for local community groups and we hope many of them will work with us to enhance community provision within the area.”
She said social care and community groups were invited to get in touch to register their interest in looking around the Deakin Centre on Tuesday 27 March from 4pm to 5.30pm.
Three other viewing and information events take place over the next few weeks: March 6 for health professionals; March 13 for education and careers colleagues; and March 20 for student families.
