University Technical College
A new University Technical College for Cambridge
- opening September 2014
The exciting new UTC Cambridge will provide outstanding and inspirational educational opportunities for 14 to 19 year-old students, with hands-on technical learning alongside academic GCSEs and A levels.
Co-sponsored by CRC and Cambridge University Health Partners, the UTC will equip students for jobs in the globally-recognised growth industries of biomedical science and environmentally sustainable products and services in the Cambridge region.
The innovative new learning centre is backed by leading biomedical and pharmaceutical businesses and will open in September 2014, putting Cambridge in the forefront of a new educational movement. UTCs nationally will create opportunities for more than 20,000 young people to train as the engineers and scientists of the future – playing a crucial role in the UK’s long-term economic growth.
When they progress from UTC Cambridge, learners will be confident, enthusiastic, highly skilled and qualified to enter higher education, further specialist training or apprenticeships, or move effectively into the workforce. UTC learners will also have the self-determining skills to play a full part in society.
UTC Cambridge will specialise in biomedical science and environmental science and technology as well as GCSEs in a broad range of subjects. Major employers and research organisations in Cambridge will provide valuable and relevant support, advice and work experience opportunities.

“CUHP is supportive of the UTC because the University and its NHS partners have a major role as employers of technicians and related staff supporting the local health and biomedical-based economy.” Patrick Sissons, Executive Director, Cambridge University Health Partners
“We are a major employer in the area, employing people with a range of skill sets – we would benefit from motivated, enthusiastic, passionate young people ready to enter the workplace in areas of our pharmaceutical business. Supporting the UTC gives us the opportunity to shape what employers want from the next generation of employees.” David Silver, Operations Director and Interim Director of Finance, Napp
