Golf Academy

Cambridge Regional College is launching the region’s first Golf Academy in partnership with Girton Golf Club, offering the chance for teenagers to pursue their dream career. The programme combines study for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport with intensive golf training and conditioning, helping prepare students to play professionally or go on to PGA coaching or a PGA foundation degree.

Students will be based at the club throughout the Golf Academy’s two-year programme, with golf training from Girton’s head professional Alan Fletcher and course teaching by CRC lecturers. The programme starts in September this year and is aimed at 16 to 18 year-olds who are keen to develop a career in golf.

Format of the Programme

The course will not only focus on the playing and technical aspects of golf but will also include:

  • 9 hours face time with coaches each week
  • 3 hours x 3 days of pastoral and tutor time to complete Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Studies
  • Golf specific training and conditioning
  • Biomechanics of the golf swing
  • Custom fitting and equipment technology

Course Overview

You will study the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport to prepare you for a career in the sports industry. This is an eighteen unit  programme, which includes (units are subject to change):

Module 1

  •  The Physiology of Fitness
  •  Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
  •  Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  •  Current Issues in Sport
  •  Assessing Risk in Sport
  •  Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
  •  Practical Team Sports

Module 2

  •  Sport Injuries
  •  Fitness Training and Programming
  •  Psychology for Sports Performance
  •  Sports Development
  •  Sports Coaching
  •  Practical Team Sports

All students will have the opportunity to choose one out of the following pathways in their second year:

  •  Science Pathway
  •  Coaching Pathway
  •  Fitness Pathway
