The course can also be taken in conjunction with a BTEC Higher Apprenticeship. The course, the equivalent of a first year at university, is aimed mainly at working scientists - offering enhanced training for biological scientists currently employed in technical work and the skills and knowledge for employment in biologically-based industries.
There are 4 core units for the BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma. These are:
• Cell Biology
• Laboratory Techniques for Applied Biology
• Analysis of Scientific Data and Information
• Work based investigation. You will need to arrange your own work experience or employment in a science based workplace.
Optional Units will be taken from:
• Chemistry for Applied Biologists
• Laboratory Management
• Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways
• Physiology of Cellular Systems in Animals
• Personal and Professional Development (done in workplace)
Some units are designed to be completed in a scientific place of work under guidance from college staff and employers. Please also note that units are subject to change.
This is classed as a part-time course - on successful completion of the two years, you will gain a BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma. You can achieve a BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma by studying a further two years.
Home and EU students are eligible to apply for a loan from the Student Loans Company.
