Academic courses
These focus on subjects you'll know from school such as English, Maths and Science, as well as new subjects such as Human Physiology and Health, Psychology and Photography.
VOCATIONAL COURSES:
BTEC Diplomas and Vocational Diplomas e.g. NCFE, IMI, CACHE, VCTC
providing broad based vocational education in a subject area.
NVQ (National Vocational Qualifications)
These focus on more specific skills based training leading to employment in particular industries.
New Vocational Diplomas
The government have introduced these diplomas from 2008. They combine theoretical study with practical activities and cromprise:
- learning about the vocational sector chosen
- functional skills in English, Maths, ICT, personal learning & thinking skills, and work experience
- additional specialist learning
Apprenticeships
These are ideal if you want to combine a career with study. You can come to College part-time while you work
Which Level is right for me?
There are four levels of which you can study one of, depending on your GCSE results. Below are a guideline entry requirements, however they will vary a little between subjects. When you apply, you will be invited to come and meet us to talk in more detail.
Entry/Level One
These qualifications are for students who are not yet ready to take vocational Level 2 courses equivalent to (5 GCSEs A* to C). E.g. BTEC Introductory Diplomas, NVQ1 - National Vocational Qualifications, Other Vocational Diplomas, The New Foundation Diplomas.
Level 2
BTEC First Diploma, NVQ2 - National Vocational Qualifications, GCSEs, The New Higher Diplomas
Level 3
All Level 3 advanced qualifications can lead to Higher Education, and/or entry to professional level jobs and careers. With 4 or more GCSEs at grade C or above, you can look at the following: E.g. BTEC National Qualification, Other Vocational Diplomas, NVQ3 - National Vocational Qualification, The new Advanced Diploma.
Level 4
In the future you may be thinking of full or part-time study at university or college. E.g. Art Foundation courses, Higher National Diplomas/Certificates (HND/HNC), Foundation degrees, Degree courses, NVQ4 - National Vocational Qualifications
