Sanger Institute launches new apprenticeship with CRC
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is ‘growing its own talent’ through a Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship programme in partnership with Cambridge Regional College.
The Institute has just welcomed new apprentice Claire Cormie, who will gain qualifications as well as hands-on experience during the two-year apprenticeship.
Chris Hale, Senior Staff Scientist at the Sanger Institute, said: “The goal of the Laboratory Technician Apprentice programme is to help us grow our own talent. We want to participate in developing and training a talent pipeline that will make working for us attractive to bright individuals and their networks.”
The Sanger will be working closely with CRC to help Claire with her development and maximise her learning and achievements. During the apprenticeship she will study for a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities and a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science.
Claire will be joining Sanger’s Infection Genomics Team, gaining practical experience in a working laboratory and developing a sound understanding of host-pathogen interactions while supporting scientists with their investigations.
Angela Hughes, head of apprenticeships at Cambridge Regional College, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and helping them train talented young people through the Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship programme.”
